Free guide: How to secure unrestricted funding

Unrestricted funding is often described as the “gold dust” of the charity sector: powerful, transformative, and frustratingly hard to secure. (See: Unrestricted Funding needs a rebrand)

However, the good news is that we are slowly seeing more funders turn towards trust-based philanthropy – a very welcome and much needed shift! This means we need to ensure that charities are ready for it and also doing what we can to support this shift. As charity leaders and fundraisers we must have the foundations in place to make unrestricted funding a much more compelling ask - shifting the narrative from unrestricted/overheads to impactful strategic funding.

This guide explores the foundations that make strategic funding more achievable: clarity of purpose, strong positioning, visibility, relationship‑based fundraising, and the confidence to ask for what you actually need. It’s aims to spark reflection, strengthen your strategic thinking, and help you see where your organisation already has strengths to build on.

If you read this and recognise areas where you’d like support, whether that’s developing your Theory of Change, strengthening your narrative, or building funder relationships, we’d love to talk.

Download the guide below and start exploring how you could shift from restricted grants to strategic funding.
